Dog World Breed Notes relating to Other ActivitiesClick here to return to UK Show Scene 9 February Sue Craigie tells me that Kiera (Harvesttrail Kiera of Imbali) had a very good weekend by winning the Puppy Hound Group on Saturday at the 2-day Hitchin show under Mike Capel then yesterday won BP under Alex Mackenzie followed by BPIS under Ben Reynolds-Frost. This is her 2nd BPIS win. Ron and Vera Swales had an excellent day at Mansfield and District CA Open Show, where (Kofi) Mwani Bakari took lst Junior, and BPIB under judge Jocelyn Cyprien, With Puppy GP 1 Judge Dennis McMillan, Res BPIS Judge Lynne Salt.
6th October 2005 My report of the Munster Circuit stated that Veldtkammer Get Ofa My Cloud took BOB when it fact it was Heidi Shepherd’s bitch Eilack Tuli With Kuwinda (JW) that won. At Carlow & District Show on Saturday 17th, Tony Edward's Am Ch Camelots Ragnor of Lyonvelt took Green Star with Best of Breed, while J. McManus's Jimanns Emerald Isle took bitch GS. Judge was Mr Donal Neally (Irl.
22nd September 2005 The Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of France and Societe Canine de L’lile de France held a back to back show on the 10th and 11th September. Although ridgebacks are quite rare in France it is very popular and pulled entries from Holland, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Monaco, Norway, Sweden not to mention Debbie Fuller, Chris Nuttall, Lyn and Paul Hewson, and Kay and Reg Bean and ourselves from England. The Judge was Janet Wang a Breed Specialist from South Africa. Best in Show with was Nord. Ch. Rex Ventnors Akeron with Ch. Diamondridge Déjà vu taking the BOS and CAC. The dog CAC was won by Int. Nord. Ch. Ukukhanya Scout the Red Baron from the Open Class. The Reserve Bitch CAC was won by Chris Nuttall’s Ch. Nyuki’s at Home with Monduri. The next day the French President of the Rhodesian Club of France Mme. Marcellot-Carbo was judging and again RV Akeron and D Déjà vu took the top spot and CACIBs. The dog CAC was won by Mariche Rupert the Officer, handled by Debbie Fuller. We enjoyed our weekend in France as much as our previous visit a few years ago, we are made very welcome and although their entry forms are in French which strains my extremely limited vocabulary, every assistance is given to ensure that our entry forms are correct. The results from the ‘Circuit’ are as follows: At the Rhodesian Club of Ireland Championship Show Mrs Jean MacClancy was judging and BIS went to Parke’s Ch. Veldtkammer Lady Done a Bunk, taking the Dog Green Star dog was J. Ellis's Zejak Zuri Miko the Reserve Green Stars were won by the dog A.L. Edward's Camelots Ragnor of Lyonvelt and the bitch C. Briscoe's Hespa Hollyberry. At the Hound Association Ch. Show on the same day Mr. Joe Purkhiser (USA) was judging and again the BOB was V Lady Done a Bunk. The GS dog was won by Parke’s Veldtkammer Get Ofa My Cloud. The RGS dog went to the Parke’s Veldtkammer Whistle ‘N Flute Brownlee's Jambaro Goddess Athena taking the RGS. Clonmel was the next show the following day with Judge Mrs N. Robertson-Hammond (AUS). This was the first time CACIBs were on offer on the circuit. BOB with GS and CACIB was again Ch. V. Lady Done a Bunk. The Green Star Dog & C.A.C.I.B. winner was the veteran Brownlee's Saragwe Hodari Jambaro. RCACIB went the Cunningham’s Ir. Ch. Walamadengie Awesome and the RCACIB and RGS going to Shepherd’s Eilack Tuli with Kuwinda. Best Puppy in the Breed went to Parke's Hespa High As A
Kite At Killarney & District Ch. Show under judge Mrs. T. Jenkins-Jago the BOB and GS went to Ellis’ Zejak Zuri Miko. With GSB going to Brownlee’s Jambaro Goddess Athena. Karen Waller writes; ‘We had another thoroughly enjoyable visit to Ireland for the Munster Circuit this year and Saturday’s Club Show was particularly special, I would like to thank the Organisers, Judges, Stewards and Exhibitors for their kind hospitality and support. We were delighted that Zejak Zuri Miko won two more Green Stars. He now only needs one point to become an Irish Champion. A good excuse to revisit!’ And finally some more Irish Show news; At Carlow & District Show, Saturday 17th, Tony Edward's Am Ch Camelots Ragnor of Lyonvelt took Green Star with Best of Breed, while J. McManus's Jimanns Emerald Isle took bitch GS. Judge was Mr Donal Neally (Irl).
28th July 2005 Julie Pratt from Co Kilkenny, Ireland has a bitch which went missing on the Monday 25th July and is possibly stolen. She is very friendly and much missed by all the family. She is a 2 ½ year old Rhodesian Ridgeback bitch and she disappeared from the Newmarket area in Southern Ireland 8 & 9.30pm. She is tattooed in the ear and micro-chipped. There is a reward offered. Tel: +353 879 582755 or email whoshorses@eircom.net Liz and Paul Storey’s young dog Kiromol Its Now or Never has a hip score of 3:2, he is by Ch. Ndege Shaka of Eilack ex Kambond Kijakazi by Kiromol. There will be a Companion Dog show at Fornham All Saints Church, Suffolk in aid of R.R Welfare on the 8th October. The judge will be Barry Davis, Peggy Wilson asks if anyone would like to donate Rossettes or prizes please can they contact her. 21st July 2005 Some Irish Show results:
SIXTEENTH CHIEVELEY RALLY Despite a rather gloomy weather forecast, the 2005 Chieveley Rally in aid of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Welfare Trust attracted a good number of regular supporters and new faces who were rewarded for their bravery with almost wall to wall sunshine. The day followed a familiar pattern, opening with the “fun” classes, judged by Sarah Parker who, with her husband Howard, has no fewer than four rescued Ridgebacks. She found that Tao had the waggiest tail, Ziggy the greyest muzzle, Moses the most appealing eyes and she most wanted to take Poppy home, but she has enough already! On a more energetic note, another Moses won the Agility competition, Baxter was champion Bikkie Catcher and Zola left the rest gasping with a time of 2.82 seconds to win the Fastest Recall. We felt we had to reward the Parkers’ latest rescue Jake with the wooden spoon as he started off willingly enough when called but, half way down the course, wandered off for an amiable chat with spectators. Our gratitude goes to all who helped with the Bring & Buy, selling Raffle tickets, running the Agility Competition and doing so many other things (including digging deep into their pockets) which all contributed to an enjoyable and successful day. Finally, thanks to everyone’s generosity, the RRWT ended up with over £400 more than it started with. Scilla & Peter Jones
I am grateful to Dennis Boyd and Scilla and Peter Jones for giving me the last two reports. If you have anything for the breed notes I would be grateful if you could email, post or give it to me at a show. It is a very busy time at the moment both showing and at the kennels and it is very difficult to remember everything that is given to me verbally at a show. 13th July 2005 Mikki Burgess who owns Nyassa Alana at Msulwa or Aly has also told me that she has passed her silver Good Citizens test at just 9 months old. What a clever girl she is. They are aiming to go for gold before her 1st birthday in Sept. From Ireland I have the following results: At Bray & District Ch. Show under judge: Mrs. R. Parker from (Irl) the Green Star Dog & Best of Breed was awarded to Edward's Am Ch Camelots Ragnor of Lyonvelt with the Green Star Bitch being won by Cunningham's Walamadengie Lady Elegance the Reserve Green Star Dog was won by Bojkovsky's Sofala Sekuoba and MacManus' Jimanns Emerald Isle took the Reserve Green Star Bitch. At Kilkenny & District Show, judge Mr. R. Kelly awarded Green Star and Best of Breed to J & D Boyd's Sikulubani Myeisha. The Reserve BoB went to A.L. Edward's Am Ch Camelots Ragnor of Lyonvelt. Recent hip scores received have been sent to me. Cath and Phil Davis tell me that their homebred young dog Imola Integrale ( Colin ) has a score of 0-3. Also from Margaret and Graham Turner that their Lobengula Lwena of Diamondridge who is by Diamondridge Desperado JW ex. Sofala Sembala and bred by Kay Salmon has a hip score of 2.2. More news about missing dogs but, again, with a happy ending. Our neighbour whose house has 6ft brick walls with 10ft conifers and 8 foot wrought iron gates at the front and where they back on to a small wood have 6 foot fencing with barbed wire above had their 11 weeks old GSD puppy stolen from the garden. After combing the local area, putting posters and registering the puppy with www.lostdog.com they receiving no sightings or news and had nearly given up hope. Nearly a month later they had a call from a lady in Preston, some 100 miles away. This lady had also had her GSD stolen and had received a call from the RSPCA in Liverpool regarding a puppy that they had had for two weeks which had been found tied up outside the Liverpool police station. The lady from Preston was disappointed to find it was not her dog but she had seen our neighbours’ details on the internet and suggested that they should go and check to see if he was their missing dog. Amazingly enough it was their missing Sam. A very happy ending and a very lucky coincidence. Recently there has been news regarding microchips migrating or failing. I wonder if anyone has done any research regarding the optimal age for microchipping a large breed. All my dogs have been microchipped at around 18 months old and all the microchips are still in place. My oldest, Flair was microchipped five years ago. I have heard of people microchipping puppies before they leave the nest. My misgivings are that with the growth of our breed and the looseness of their skin would that increase the risk of chips migrating? I would be interested to hear if anyone has any experiences they would like to relate, or if anyone has an answer to the question. 23rd June 2005 Over in Ireland at Swords & District under judge Mrs M Van Brempt Green Star Dog & Best of Breed went to J. & G Anthony's Veldtkammer Charly Taters with the Res. G.S.D.going to J & G Anthony's Veldtkammer Braces Vom Rottzridge. The Green Star Bitch & Res. BoB went to D & J Boyd's Sikulubani Myeisha with Res. G.S.B. going to J. McManus Jimanns Emerald Isle Linda Parkes tells me that a bitch she bred Veldtkammer Jam Jar, who was shown by 17 year old Laura McDonald for the first time took RBPIS at Newark and Nottingham. The Best Puppy in Show and Breed Judge was Roy Metcalf and the Group judge was Jean Weston. All in all it was a very good weekend for their breeding. Within the space of 2 weeks I hear news of two Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies being stolen. The first an 8 month old male from Kent was taken by a farm worker but returned by someone who spotted him for the reward money. The second a 7 1/2 month old male from Debbie Fuller’s back garden in Essex. Fortunately this also ended happily as the police spotted him collapsed at the side of the road, luckily with very superficial damage. It really does pay to be vigilant with youngsters, people would probably think twice about stealing an adult ridgeback but will consider youngsters fair game. 16th June Gill Lawless was in Holland just prior to Bath to collect Ambaa her new puppy (Helen came this time as Toni was judging in Germany). They were also entered at a show on the Friday at Berghem, this was an international show so CAC's were on offer again, Fiyaa (Faahac S'Fiyaa JW ) now had to be entered in the open class as she is now 2 yrs old she won the class and took the CAC and the CACIB this being only her second visit abroad, unfortunately Ambaa had come into season a few weeks before so could not be shown. They had an uneventful journey home thankfully with Ambaa's passport being valid on the day they sailed. All in all a very successful weekend 27th May 2005 Sue Craigie continued her Continental travels with UK, INT & Ir CH Imbali Kipenzi JW and UK & INT CH Imbali Azizi (subject to FCI confirmation) when she showed them at Elvas International Show in Portugal and then the following day at Badajoz International Show in Spain. At Elvas Kip won the CACIB and BOB. At Badajoz Kip won the CAC & CACIB, Zena also won the CAC & CACIB then took BOB over her brother. Zena then went on to win 3rd in the Group Judging. The judges were Steve Seymour from Australia and Stefan Stefik from Slovakia. There was a great deal of difference in the two shows with the Spanish one being extremely professionally run, the breed judging was conducted in good outdoor rings (surrounded with potted plants, shaded seating for the stewards and gazebos for the exhibitors and their dogs), the BIS and Group judging was held inside the sports arena which was fully carpeted and lined with tiered seating, it definitely had a Crufts "look" about it. Temperatures were considerably higher than in the UK being around 36 degrees C. Having two shows over the same weekend drew an entry from several countries making them truly International shows, people entered from all parts of Spain and Portugal as well as from Austria, Finland, France, Gibraltar, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, UK and the USA. Travelling with Kip and Zena has given her a wonderful opportunity of competing against Ridgebacks from many different countries and she has been able to observe the many differences between Ridgebacks in this country with those in others.
15th May 2005 And now for the International News, a few weeks ago Gill Lawless and
Toni Agnew visited Holland to see Gill's new puppy Ambaa again,
they decided to combine the visit with going to Leiden International Show.
They took Fiyaa and Robyn, the first time they have been shown
abroad, call it beginners luck but Fiyaa came away with the res CAC
and CACIB, Ambaa won Best Puppy and was in the last 6 for BPIS.
Toni had a good day getting 2nd in her class and challenging
for the res CAC, this also went to Fiyaa. Gill Lawless says 'As
you can imagine we didn't need a boat to come home!!!! We were delighted with
our first attempt at showing on the continent." 24th February for the 5th March
With the problems that some people are having with Breed Specific Legislation it is a worry when local Governments cannot get information produced on their website correct. Recently whilst surfing the web using ‘Rhodesian Ridgeback’ as the search words I came across the words which jumped out and hit me that dangerous dogs including pit bulls and Rhodesian Ridgebacks should be muzzled in public. Thinking that it was some sort of ‘crank’ site I was surprised to see that it was on the Richmondshire Local Government site in a .pdf document about responsible dog ownership. Having highlighted the discrepancy to a number of people they received many complaints and it has now been removed. It is a worry when a Government cannot even get its own legislation right and how long had the statement been on the site giving people the wrong impression of our breed. I feel that we will have similar problems with the ‘hunting with dogs’ legislation. How many of us have gone to a show, put
the dog in the car with the intention of going back for all the other
paraphernalia only to find that the keys are locked in the car? For those of us
who have a car that can be unlocked by that remote button on your key ring and
the spare keys are at home here's your answer to the problem! 31/12/2004 From Ireland at the last I.K.C. Championship Show of 2004, Dublin Dog Show Society (Dec. 27th) judge Mrs. Zita Fogarty awarded Green Star Dog to Anthony Edward's Am Ch Comelots Ragnor at Lyonvelt and Green Star Bitch and Best of Breed went to Joan & Dennis Boyd's Sikulubani Myeisha 1/12/2004 At the Cloghran All Breed Ch. Show in Ireland the breed was judged by Mr M forte, who found his Green Star Dog & Best of Breed in Susanne Bojkovsky's Sofala Sekuoba - his first Green Star and BoB, the Green Star bitch was E. Patterson's Rocksham Kelder Clive and Judith Brownlee have a baby girl which was born on Friday 19th November weighing 6lb 13oz. Her name is Jessica Caroline
19/11/2004 News from a very happy Toni Agnew. “At last Robyn has arrived from Sweden. She flew into Manchester airport last Thursday 11th November and came out of the crate wagging her tail and giving “kisses “. Through the breed notes I would like to say a very BIG THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us over the last 2 years, you have certainly kept us going through plans A to Z !! “ I attended the very first Discover Dogs but have not been back since and my impressions that it was a lot busier with more events in the main ring. The Ridgeback stand was, as usual extremely well attended with many potential owners taking the time to research the breed before buying. The stand could benefit from more photos of the breed and I am sure that if any one has some really good photos of ridgeback which show the personality and traits of our breed that Sheila Firth who organises Discover Dogs will be pleased to hear from you. 11/11/2004 News from Ireland Joan and Dennis Boyd write: “Mr Brian Fogarty (Yarabis), replacement judge on the day, judged the breed at All Ireland Bull Breeds Ch. Show held on Bank Holiday Monday (25th Oct.) His Green Star Dog and Best of Breed went to G&J Cunningham's Walamadengie Awesome whilst he awarded Green Star Bitch to D & J Boyd's Sikulubani Zakiya. Best Puppy was D & J Boyd's Sikulubani Myeisha. Karen Waller writes “Congratulations to Paul and Liz Storey and Delilah on becoming an Irish Champion. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who attended the refreshingly friendly and supportive shows on the Munster Circuit this year. It was great to see everyone come home a winner! This was our first visit to Ireland and we thoroughly enjoyed it, we were delighted that Miko won two Green Stars, one under Mrs Sue Simper at the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Ireland Show with his son Jazz winning Best Puppy, and one with BOB at Limerick under Mr R Dempsey. Grandad, Merlin, also came home with a Green Star, won under Rick Fehler at the Hound Association Show. 14/10/2004 Liz Storey writes: "Following a wonderful win by Delilah of Bitch Green Star and Best in Show at the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Ireland's championship show and Bitch Green Star at Limerick during our second visit to the Munster Circuit this August, we have received confirmation from the Irish Kennel Club that, together with her Green Stars from last year's visit, our homebred Kiromol Kianga (Ch./Ir.Ch./Intl. Ch Imbali Kipenzi - Kambond Kijakazi by Kiromol), is now officially an Irish Champion."
16/09/2004 At the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Ireland Show
under judge: Sue Simper (Matabelle) the Green Star Dog went to
J. Ellis's Zejak Zuri Miko with the Res. GSD going to J&A Ringer's
Flametrees The Dophan of the Glen. The Green Star Bitch &
Best in Show went to Paul & Liz Storey's Kiromol Kianga. The
Res. GSB was J. Pratt's Zhos Choki Hooz 12/08/2004 From Ireland Dennis Boyd writes. “ A busy Bank Holiday weekend in Ireland where, firstly, on Saturday Ir. Kennel Club 'Green Stars' were awarded for the first time in Northern Ireland, at Bangor & North Down Canine Club. Rhodesian Ridgebacks drew the largest entry in the hound group with 23. Australian judge Mr. S. Seymour, found his Green Star and Best of Breed in Gordon & Janice Cunningham's Walamadengie Awesome. Green Star Bitch went to Cathy Gillespie's Kirafiki Akanke. Secondly, at the IKC show grounds Dublin on Sunday, at Monkstown International Show - judge Wendy Jackson (Irl) selected her Green Star dog and CACIB in Tony Edward's Am. Ch. Camelot's Ragnor of Lyonvelt. Green Star Bitch, CACIB and Best of Breed was again Cathy Gillespie's Kirafiki Akanke - who, subject to IKC ratification, gains her Irish title. The SRRA’s Open Show is to be judged by Kelvin Barnes – dogs and Gillian Mitchelson – bitches and will be held the 24th October at a new venue, National Animal Welfare Trust, Trindledown Farm. Wantage Road, Great Shefford, Berks. RG17 7DQ which is just 7 minutes from Junction 14 of the M4. Trindledown Farm is a retirement centre for elderly animals, their website is ww.nawt.org.uk/retire.htm There arefull disabled facilities there as well. Yvonne Bowker asks if Ridgeback Class Winners of 2004 for all shows, Open and Champ. Shows would send her a photograph with a note saying which show, judge, date etc. All photographs will be returned. Peter Jones writes of the Chieveley Rally in aid of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Welfare Trust. “It takes more than a few hitches to prevent a dedicated crowd of people and a bunch of Ridgebacks from having fun. The weather forecast was distinctly unsettled, there were major road works at the nearby motorway junction, Chieveley village was closed due to a dangerous roadside building and suffered a power failure at the same time. Despite all this, we had a good turnout for our 15th Rally and only once had to flee for cover for a short but fairly sharp downpour. In the fun classes, Bella Mitchell had the Waggiest Tail, Ryzhka Dunlop the Greyest Muzzle, Max van Orden the Most Appealing Eyes and Carol Davies found the dog she most wanted to take home was Elsa Betts. Honorary RR’s took the champion rosettes for the Fastest Recall (Freddie) and Bikkie Catching (Roxy), but Ridgeback honour was upheld by Moses who won the Agility - the first time for years that Linford hasn’t won it, but then he is 12 and managed to come second! We also had a Rescue Parade, a Raffle, a Bring & Buy stall, a Barbecue and, of course, some silly races guaranteed to raise a laugh. A special appeal raised £100 for Sky who was rescued with a broken leg unhealed after 6 months thanks to her owner allowing her to play with her sister after it was set. Sadly, she will probably lose the leg, but has already learned to manage without it. Our thanks go to everyone who came for being such good sports, for helping in so many ways and, above all, for digging so generously into their pockets to make the day such a success.” 1st July 2004 In Ireland at the Kilkenny Ch. Show: on the 26/6/04 under
Judge Pam Mottorshaw from Jersey, there was only one Green Star
on offer which went to the BOB winner - Janice & Gordon Cunningham's
Walamadengie Awesome - who went on to take Grp 4 in Hound Group under
judge E. Patterson (N. Irl.). The reserve GS and RBoB: was also won
by the Cunningham with Walamadengie Lady Elegance, Best Puppy: was
won by J&D Boyd's Sikulubani Myeisha. Green Star and BOB went to John and Dennis Boyd’s Sikulubani Zakiya with Gordon and Janice Cunningham’s Walamadengie Awesome winning the Dog Green Star. At the same show our breed was represented for the first time in Ireland at Championship level in Agility by Susanne Bojkovsky’s Sofala Sekuaba who took a creditable 4th place in the Introductory Agility under Judge Mr J Ward. Susanne also advises that Sekuaba’s Hip Score results are 3:3. 17th June 2004 Events in aid of the Midland and Northern Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue. A Public dance was held in York on the 30th April in aid of Ridgeback Rescue. The dance was organised and run by Cheryl and Brenda Mackfall, who did a great job of selling tickets and arranging the event. The entertainment was provided by the Derek Mackfall Dance Band, who played the whole evening. A raffle and tombola were held to make as much money as possible for this worthy cause. At the end of the night a cheque for £850 was presented to Gillian Craven, Chair of the Midland and Northern Rhodesian Ridgeback club to be handed to the Rescue co-ordinator. 100 On the 22nd of May, Cheryl and John Mackfall held a Fun day with the support of the Midland and Northern RR club. The day started with a Treasure Hunt which was followed by various games and displays for all to take part in. The event was well attended and an excellent BBQ lunch was provided for all. The event was also in aid of Rescue and a total of £350 was presented to the Midland and Northern Treasurer. In the two events a total of £1200 was raised for this worthy cause. A special thank you to all who helped on the day raise the much needed money. Some sad news for exhibitors who may remember Mary Williams. Mary died suddenly in December 2003. She was well known when she campaigned Ch M'bona's Shiraa of Mirengo who was co-owned by her son Guy. His picture still appears, most notably in the 2004 BHS dog calendar, although he to went to the Happy Hunting Ground in 1985. Denise Holbrook's Ngami Celeboun with the Res. G.S.D. & Res. CACIB:going to
J & D Boyd's Ch. & Int Ch. Sofala Sabiki at Sikulubani.
The Green Star & C.A.C.I.B. (bitch) was won by
Cathy Gillespie's Kirafiki Akanke and the The raffle at the recent Inter Club Match in Dog World raised £75 for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and Leanne O'Hagan was the winner of the Quiz. Another good win was notched up for ridgebacks when Chris Nuttall represented the breed with Ch Nyuki Kilifi's at home with Monduri JW. Indee rose to the occasion when on centre stage and won the first, second and third rounds, being knocked out in the fourth round - the final 8 from 64. Debbie Fuller says “I’m sure that most people know how the contest is run, it was a great night with some really lovely dogs present.”In December last year I spoke of a bitch Blondie from a village in Wales who had disappeared from her garden. Her disappearance was particularly surprising as she was unlikely to go far as she had a litter of puppies which had not long been weaned. Very recently her owner Beth found out that a farmer shot Blondie on the day she went missing. It really emphasises the need to be vigilant if you live or exercise your dog in the country. Sue Craigie tells me that there is a postal strike where she lives in Bracknell so if anyone wants to check their entry is received for the SRRA Club Ch show which closed on the 19 April, please telephone her on 01344 484122.
12th March 2004 Kelly Slater has been travelling abroad again with some success. On Sunday 22nd Feb she went to the Flanders International Dog Show in Gent, Belgium and Fr Ch Flametrees Shirani of Shabani got CAC/CACIB and BOB, she also went on to win the group. 27th February 2004 Margaret Southall Obituary I was deeply saddened to hear of the death on Wednesday 11th February of Mrs Margaret Southall. A very private person, Margaret joined with Rose Baily in partnership of the famous Footpath RR in the early‘70’s. Her first show ridgeback from Rose was, I believe Ch. Finisterre of Footpath, a lovely bitch. Mated to Ch. Fargeon of Footpath she produced a Champion son Ch. Footpath Fireguard. Margaret was one of a very small number of people in the breed whose interest was in working trials and was hugely successful because of her understanding of the temperament of the breed, being a hound. She had the patience and forbearance to accept their foibles and achieved the highest of awards in the discipline. Speaking personally, I will miss Margaret for her kindness, generosity of spirit and her considerable knowledge of the breed. She was a Founder Member and Vice President of the Southern Rhodesian Ridgeback Association and helped enormously with the formation of the Club. Margaret and Rose Baily co-judged the very first show S.R.R.A. show in 1990. The funeral is to be for family, there are to be no flowers but donations to the P.D.S.A would be appreciated. Mrs Sue Simper
13th February 2004 On Sunday 1st February the S.R.R.A. held a Seminar and A2 Assessment which was run in a similar format to the Group Judges Development Programme. The morning consisted of a slide presentation of the breed standard which included conformation and construction given by Lindsey Barnes, a video on the importance of good movement given by Sue Simper and also a ‘hands-on’ session. In the afternoon each candidate judged a class of ridgebacks and wrote a full and detailed critique. Their placings and observations were discussed with the panel of June Minns, Julie Bates and Sue Simper. The Association is grateful for the contribution of Nick Bryce-Smith who acted as Moderator for the Panel and also for the handlers and dogs who behaved impeccably and were absolutely exhausted by the end of the day.
15th December 2003 The SRRA are holding a Breed Seminar in accordance with the KC Code of Best Practice and an A2 Assessment on 1st February. Agendas and details have been sent to all the judges who said earlier this year that they would like to attend. Please can you return the form as soon as possible. At present there is only one more place available on the seminar so if anyone else would like to come please let me know as soon as possible.
27th November 2003 The Kennel Club’s decision to allow judges on the C list to only judge a maximum of 3 classes but allowing Open Show Secretaries to appoint judges not on Breed Club lists for these classes will put the new Breed judges at a disadvantage. Many Secretaries are opting for 3 classes as it makes it easier to find judges and there is no incentive for them to chose judges from Breed Lists. Furthermore some societies are choosing C List judges from Breed Lists but then getting them to judge other breeds to ‘make the books balance’. In my opinion, a judge should at least be on the B List for their breed and have several years experience before being asked to judge other breeds. I often exhibit at Open Shows and occasionally will exhibit under a judge in order to keep the classes but I think now it is time to vote with my feet as by giving such societies an entry it is condoning the practice. Open shows may be struggling but I don’t think that this is the way to attract exhibitors as it encourages less experienced, pushy ‘all-rounder’ judges who have made it their business to ‘do the numbers’ at the cost of more experienced Judges on Breed Lists that are not given the opportunity to branch out and C list Breed Judges who will remain stuck on that list for years. At the risk of more ‘red tape’ the way to avoid this is for the Kennel Club to decree that judges for 3 classes are on a C list for their breed or if asked to judge another breed, on the B list for their breed but preferably higher. What is the point of having the opinion of someone who is only just learning their own breed? Another possible answer is for Breed Clubs to work more closely with those societies that are approachable to support breed judges with sponsoring rosettes etc., perhaps also they could make a donation towards the judge’s lunch or maybe the judge would agree to judge without a lunch. These are just some suggestions, but I hope that this situation resolves itself before it becomes a problem. 20th November 2003 Earlier this month the Hound Association ran a Group Judges Development Workshop where they were very pleased with the support they received from ridgeback exhibitors. Ridgeback people were very generous in putting their dogs forward for the Assessment and the standard was high with them all being Champions apart from one who is on 2 CCs. The Presenters for the Breed were Sharon Rossiter and Lindsey Barnes. The candidates were Dennis McMillan, Mark Cocozza, Martin Sanders, Viv Phillips, Jenny Startup, Paul Singleton, Nick Bryce-Smith, Graham Hill, Jean Blandford, Jenny Dove and Diana Spavin. The Panel comprised of Terry Thorn, Ann MacDonald, Jack Selby, Sue Simper and Mary Adams. I understand that all passed most passed with Credits and two received Distinctions. 7th November 2003 The date for the Inter-Club Challenge Match which is hosted by the Club of GB is Sunday March 28th 2004. It will be held at the Bretby Conference Centre, Bretby, Derbyshire and judged by Miss Satu Laakso from Finland. The previous matches have been good fun and so I hope that you will support your clubs. More details will be available from the Club Secretaries nearer the time. 23rd September 2003 I have received an email from Joan and Dennis Boyd to say that they have lost their beloved Nelson - Ir. Ch. Bwaga of Kilsinroe. Nelson introduced them to the show scene, and was a joy to exhibit - loving the limelight and a natural 'show-dog'. He had a long and successful career. He gained his Championship Title in 1993 at the St. Patrick's Day Show and he was the first dog in the breed in the British Isles to be awarded a C.A.C.I.B. I am sure that some of you are familiar with the Camino books from the US. They inform me that they are now working on the latest edition "Rhodesian Ridgeback Champions, 2001-2003. They are asking for input from breeders who might want to send articles and/or other information on the breed for this publication from other countries as well as the US. If you are interested their website is www.camino-books.com

Jenny Maitland-Jones writes regarding the recent Rhodesian Ridgeback Welfare Trust rally at Chieveley. The Welfare Trust’s recent summer rally, held as usual at Chieveley Village Hall in Berkshire proved a great success and attracted over a hundred people and their assorted Ridgebacks (actual , and honorary for the day). The event raised a total of £561 for Rescue funds, plus the return from the various merchandise items sold. Particularly in demand was the new mug recently designed by Brian Davies. The Bring & Buy masterminded by the Scotts netted £149.00, contributions to Barrie Davies’ barbecue raised £99.00 and terrific exertions in selling raffle tickets brought in £320.00. The trust is particularly grateful to all those who contributed the very many bottles to the raffle. Enthusiasm was immense for the various activities which included the ever-popular bikkie catching, and the variety classes for Rescues which were judged by Debbie Fuller. The agility course (courtesy Justice for Dogs) was well patronised, and the afternoon ended with lure coursing, in which the Ridgebacks were entirely put to shame by the brilliant speed and tenacity of what was thought to be a cross Manchester Terrier/ Chihuahua. Never mind Ridgies, there’s always next time! Thanks to all RRWT supporters who contribute so much to the success of this day. |
